圣诗是神赐给教会的瑰宝。当一切美善之来源的神，以祂的形象创造了人的时候，祂就赋予了人欣赏艺术与创作艺术的本能。
当神在地上设立教会，祂也要人以音乐和诗歌来敬拜祂。
音乐是艺术的一种形态，它的独特之处是可以表达人的情感，美妙的音乐可以超越国界。
配上歌词的音乐更能表达人具体的感情，描述人内部的心理活动，所以美好的诗歌能唤起人高尚的情操，将我们内心对神的赞美，
在圣灵中用真理（心灵诚实）适切地表达出来。 因此，马丁路德说：圣诗是教会的第二本圣经。
圣诗对塑造我们的灵命有非常重要的关系。圣诗歌词的内容，直接影响著我们对圣经真理体系的认识，尤其藉著音乐，更容易引导我们将一些真理（或误导我们，将一些错误的真理）存在心里。所以，我們唱的诗歌，与我们基督徒生活、我们的灵命是息息相关。 在这方面，传统圣诗具有比较优越的功能，因为传统圣诗都经过历代圣徒的传唱，通过了筛选与历史淬炼而留下来的。這是一個值得我们去挖掘的豐富宝藏，並接下传承这些宝藏的責任。

This hymn has long been embraced by serving and veteran members of the armed forces. With it's comforting words and soulful tune, it is especially sung at Remembrance and funerals. This video focuses on the generations of servicemen & women and their families who have endured the pain, suffering & horror of war and the loss of comrades and those so dear. It is movingly sung by a Welsh Male Voice Choir. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
